Jailer 2 is one of the most-awaited sequels in South Indian cinema, bringing back Rajinikanth and director Nelson Dilipkumar after the massive success of Jailer. The 2023 action entertainer became a major blockbuster, performing exceptionally well in Tamil Nadu while also establishing a strong market in the Telugu states. Its Telugu version reportedly grossed around ₹84 crore, making Jailer one of Rajinikanth’s biggest Telugu successes. With the sequel now officially scheduled for October 15, 2026, expectations are naturally much higher.
Massive Price For Telugu Rights
The big talking point now is the price being sought for Jailer 2’s Telugu theatrical rights. Reports from the Telugu trade suggest that the makers are quoting around ₹55 crore plus GST and other costs, which could take the overall investment close to ₹70 crore. That is a massive asking price, especially after Rajinikanth’s previous release Coolie failed to deliver the expected returns in the Telugu market. Distributors are reportedly hesitant to commit such a huge amount, raising the question of who would be willing to take such a big risk.
Stakes Rise After Coolie
Rajinikanth’s Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, opened to phenomenal numbers and recorded a huge worldwide opening, driven by enormous pre-release hype and the superstar’s presence. However, the film lost momentum after its opening stretch and eventually finished with around ₹503.5 crore worldwide, well below expectations considering its scale and business. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it grossed around ₹67.5 crore but reportedly remained a loss-making proposition because of its high rights price. That makes the stakes for Jailer 2 extremely high in the Telugu states: despite Coolie’s underperformance, the success of Jailer has given its sequel enough confidence to command a premium price.
